Why Counselling or Therapy?

Many clients come to therapy because they sense something isn’t quite right. You may not feel happy, fulfilled or connected, perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, isolated or stuck, but you can’t always pinpoint the cause. You might be facing known challenges like bereavement, the breakdown of a relationship, work stress or the loss of a job, or you may be feeling trapped by recurring patterns, reacting in ways that no longer serve you.

At certain times in life, we all find ourselves asking deeper questions:
Who am I? What do I want? Why do I keep feeling this way?

Psychodynamic therapy offers a space to explore these questions in a safe and non-judgemental environment,  helping you make sense of your inner world and uncover meaning in your emotional experience.

What is Psychodynamic Therapy?

Psychodynamic counselling is a form of talk therapy that aims to increase self-awareness and bring unconscious processes to light. These often originate in early relationships and childhood experiences, but continue to shape our adult lives, from the way we relate to others, to how we feel about ourselves and manage stress, loss or change.

The psychodynamic model uses a triangle of insight:

  • Your relationships with significant people in the past
  • Your relationship with yourself and others in the present
  • The therapeutic relationship between you and your counsellor

Exploring this triangle helps uncover the root causes of distress and create the possibility for change, not just symptom relief, but lasting emotional growth.

Why Work Psychodynamically?

This approach is especially helpful if you’re experiencing:

  • Ongoing low mood or anxiety
  • Relationship difficulties or loneliness
  • A sense of being ‘stuck’ in repeating patterns
  • Emotional pain that doesn’t seem to shift
  • The long-term effects of trauma, neglect, or childhood abuse
  • Identity questions or life transitions that feel confusing or unsettling

Rather than offering quick fixes, psychodynamic therapy encourages deep self-reflection and long-term transformation. It’s about understanding why you feel the way you do, and working through it with support and care.
